AeroPress Steel Coffee Maker
Is AeroPress Steel dishwasher-safe?
Yes, AeroPress Steel is dishwasher-safe. If you don’t have a dishwasher, you can also clean it by hand with lukewarm water, gentle soap, and a gentle cloth every week.
Does the stainless steel chamber get hot?
No, because the chamber is double-wall stainless steel, it does not get hot.
Does AeroPress Steel lose significant amounts of heat due to its all-Stainless-Steel design?
No. In fact, AeroPress Steel retains heat better than other AeroPress coffee makers. In brewing, temperature is typically lost in two ways. First, when hot water is added and first contacts the chamber wall, then second, while the coffee is brewing during the immersion part of the process, heat is lost to the surrounding air. Due to AeroPress Steel’s unique double-wall design, less heat is absorbed by the brewing chamber when the hot water is first added, resulting in a higher initial brew temperature. The double-wall design also provides insulation, which keeps the coffee hot longer during the brew process. Note: Preheating any chamber will raise the starting brew temperature, but it does not significantly change the rate of heat loss.
Is the Steel meant for travel?
Yes, because it’s made from durable stainless steel, AeroPress Steel is a great option for travel, your home kitchen, or anywhere you need great coffee. Like any stainless steel product, however, if mistreated, it can be subject to denting.
My Steel filter cap gets hot after brewing. What do I do?
You can let it sit for just a few moments, run the filter cap under cool water before removing it from the chamber or you can use a cloth to remove it.
What materials go into making AeroPress Steel?
The chamber, plunger, filter cap, scoop and stirrer are made of professional-grade 304 stainless steel. The plunger seal is made of LFGB-grade silicone.
What is 304 stainless steel? Is it the same as 18/8 stainless steel?
304 stainless steel is a professional-grade, food-safe stainless steel alloy known for its strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. It contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel — which is why you may also see it referred to as “18/8” stainless steel. In fact, 18/8 and 304 are often used interchangeably; 18/8 simply describes the minimum chromium and nickel content within the 304 specification range. Because of its excellent resistance to rust and staining, along with its ability to handle repeated heating and cooling, 304 stainless steel is widely used in food and beverage equipment, commercial kitchens, medical tools, and other demanding everyday applications. It’s strong, stable, and built to last — making it an ideal material for brewing exceptional coffee.
Why is AeroPress Steel manufactured with professional-grade 304 stainless steel?
We chose 304 stainless steel because it delivers the ideal balance of durability, corrosion resistance, food safety, and manufacturability for a precision coffee press. 304 is exceptionally resistant to rust and staining, making it perfect for repeated exposure to hot water and daily use. It’s also strong and impact-resistant, helping the AeroPress Steel stand up to years of brewing at home or on the go. Just as important, 304 stainless steel is easier to form and weld than many alternative alloys. That matters in a product like AeroPress Steel, where tight tolerances and precise assembly are essential to ensuring a consistent seal and dependable performance. You may see other brands describe their stainless steel as “18/8” or even “aerospace grade.” In practice, 18/8 is simply another way of describing 304 stainless steel. While 304 can be used in certain non-structural aerospace components, it is not typically selected for high-stress aircraft structures because aerospace engineering prioritizes extremely high strength-to-weight ratios and specialized alloys. For a coffee press, however, 304 stainless steel is exactly the right material — durable, corrosion-resistant, food-safe, and built for everyday performance.
Why does AeroPress Steel use vacuum-insulated double-wall construction instead of standard double-wall construction?
A vacuum-insulated double-wall chamber reduces heat transfer far more effectively than a standard double wall because the air between the walls is removed, minimizing conductive and convective heat loss. This helps maintain a higher, more stable brewing temperature throughout immersion, supporting better brew control.
What is the capacity of AeroPress Steel?
The Steel chamber holds up to 12 oz, 20% more capacity than AeroPress Original, Clear, Premium and Go Plus.
What size filters work with AeroPress Steel?
AeroPress Steel is compatible with standard-size AeroPress filters.
I noticed that my AeroPress Steel seal stays compressed inside the chamber when I store it with the plunger inside. Is that a problem?
No — this is completely normal and won’t damage your seal. Early AeroPress models used natural rubber seals that could wear out faster if stored compressed inside the chamber, but the current AeroPress Steel uses a durable silicone seal that doesn’t fatigue under compression. You can safely store your plunger inside the chamber without affecting the seal’s lifespan.
Can I use the standard-size AeroPress Flow Control Cap with AeroPress Steel?
Yes, AeroPress Steel is compatible with the standard-size AeroPress Flow Control Cap.
Why are there numbers (1-5) on the chamber of AeroPress Steel if you can’t see the coffee inside?
The number markings are a recognizable part of the AeroPress design and, by including them on Steel, we’re protecting our trademark. To help with fill guidance, the inside of the chamber includes a laser-etched mark at the 5 level that can be seen from above. Most people can simply fill the amount of water they want. If you want more consistency, you can measure water with a measuring cup. For the most precise brewing, you can also measure water with a scale. Do not press while the AeroPress is on a scale.

Variable Flow Control Cap – XL
How is the AeroPress XL Variable Flow Control Cap different from the AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap?
The AeroPress XL Variable Flow Control Cap blocks drip-through with a Flow Restriction Disk which the user can adjust using an open-close tab, while the AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap stops drip-through with a pressure-actuated valve. They work differently, but the result is the same – delicious coffee in any style you choose, from cold brew to espresso-style, lattes and more.
How does the AeroPress XL Variable Flow Control Cap work?
Liquid does not begin flowing through the holes until the tab of this AeroPress flow control cap is opened. When fully closed, the seal plate stops all drip-through so that users can adjust their flow rates, extend their brew times and control their brew.
Why does the open/close tab sometimes feel stiff?
Coffee residue can build up around the cap’s moving parts after brewing, especially if the cap is put away without rinsing. If the tab feels tough to open or close after sitting for a day or more, rinsing the cap usually restores smoother movement; for some users, warm water with a little dish soap (and then rinse thoroughly) works even better.
What should I do if the tab becomes hard to open or close?
Hand wash using dish soap and warm water and then rinse thoroughly before next use. To prevent a recurrence, we recommend rinsing the cap with warm water after each brew.
Should I rinse it after every use?
Yes. For best day-to-day performance, rinse the cap after each brew while moving the tab between open and closed positions. A simple rinse while rotating the tab is sufficient for regular cleaning. If the tab feels stiff when opening or closing, hand wash with dish soap and warm water, then rinse thoroughly.
Brewing with AeroPress coffee makers
What grind size should I use?
For the best brewing experience, use a medium-fine grind size, shake to level the bed of coffee grounds before pouring in the water, and pour the water slowly. Read More
Why is it important to use a good-quality grinder?
We recommend using a burr grinder instead of a blade grinder with AeroPress coffee makers. If you do use a blade grinder, we have found that it takes around 30 seconds of continuous grinding to achieve a medium-fine grind size with a blade grinder.
A good grinder will grind coffee into particles of uniform size. Very fine particles block the flow of water and make it difficult to press. The same blocking occurs if your grinder is dull because it produces particles of varying size and the fine particles will block the spaces between the larger particles.
How much coffee do AeroPress scoops hold?
All AeroPress scoops have the same capacity. A level scoop holds 12-13 grams of coffee. A heaping (rounded) scoop of coffee holds 16-18 grams.
Why do you recommend brewing with 175°F (80°C) water for dark roasts and 185°F (85°C) for medium and light roasts?
All of our tasters agreed that coffee brewed at these temperatures tasted the best. These temperatures deliver smooth, rich brews without the bitterness and acidity that come with using hotter water. One of the advantages of AeroPress coffee makers is the user controls all the brewing process variables including the temperature of the water used. We recommend brewing with water of different temperatures to determine one’s personal preference.
How do I best judge water level in AeroPress Original, Go, and Original XL chambers?
Look down into the chamber from above. The numbers on the outside are visible through the material particularly if looking down against a light background.
Ground coffee floating around in the chamber can make it difficult to judge the water level. Try pouring in half of the water, stirring to wet all the grounds, and then pouring up to the desired level.
Some water drips through the coffee and micro-filter before I stir and press. Is that OK?
Even when using the optimal medium-fine grind, it is normal for a minor amount of liquid (about 2-3%) to drip through prior to stirring and pressing. If a lot of liquid runs through prematurely, remember to shake to level the grounds and pour the water slowly. If an excess amount still runs through prematurely, you need to use a finer grind of coffee.
Am I doing something wrong if it is hard to press?
You may need to use a better or sharper grinder. A good, sharp grinder (ideally a good burr grinder) grinds coffee into particles that are all the same size. A cheap or dull grinder produces a wide variety of particle sizes and the very small dust-like particles at the fine end of the particle size distribution block the flow around the larger particles, turning the layer of coffee particles into a barrier that blocks your pressing.
Press gently, there is no rush. Pressing hard actually compacts the coffee particles into a barrier, making it harder to press. You can try pressing down half an inch, then hold the plunger there and let the air pressure in the chamber do the pressing for you. Then after 5 or so seconds of waiting, press another half inch down and repeat until finished pressing.
If the above two points don’t work, use a coarser grind (ideally medium-fine) until you get to where a minor amount drips through prior to pressing and slow, gentle pressing takes 20 to 40 seconds.
Do AeroPress coffee makers make real espresso?
Many people say that espresso must be made with 9 bars of pressure. If you use this definition then no, AeroPress coffee makers do not make espresso. But if you define espresso by the taste of the drink in the cup, certainly many people think AeroPress coffee makers can brew espresso. Since coffee brewed by AeroPress coffee makers can be made into lattes, cappuccinos, and other espresso based drinks, we feel it is important to use the term “espresso” when describing what AeroPress coffee makers brew so potential customers will understand how coffee brewed by AeroPress coffee makers can be enjoyed.
For an even more espresso-like experience, try the AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap or Stainless Steel Flow Control Cap (for standard size AeroPress coffee makers), or the AeroPress Variable Flow Control Cap XL (for XL size AeroPress coffee makers)!
Can you make cold brew style coffee with AeroPress coffee makers?
Yes. Please see our cold brew page for instructions on how to make cold brew style coffee with AeroPress coffee makers.
What is the best coffee for AeroPress coffee makers?
You can use any coffee when brewing with AeroPress coffee makers and you’ll get a delicious cup! But the bottom line is that the best coffee for AeroPress coffee makers is whatever coffee tastes best to you. Experiment with different roasters, origins, and roast levels, and maybe you’ll find your next favorite coffee!
Depending on what roast you’re using, you may want to switch up your brewing temperature. If you are brewing with light or medium roasts, a great place to start is a brewing temperature of around 175°F (80°C) water for dark roasts and 185°F (85°C) for medium and light roasts. But as always – experiment and see what tastes best to you!
What’s the optimal brewing temperature for AeroPress coffee makers?
We found in our taste tests that using slightly different brew temperatures for different roasts can yield great results. A great starting point is to brew with 175°F (80°C) water for dark roasts and 185°F (85°C) for medium and light roasts. These temperatures deliver smooth, rich brews without the bitterness and acidity that come with using hotter water, but as ever, they’re just a starting point. One of the advantages of AeroPress coffee makers is the user controls all the brewing process variables including the temperature of the water used. We recommend brewing with water of different temperatures to learn what tastes best to you!
How many grams of coffee for AeroPress coffee makers?
A lot of people want to know how much coffee to use when they first begin brewing with an AeroPress coffee maker. As a starting point, we recommend one heaping scoop of medium-fine grind coffee, or 16-18 grams of coffee per cup.
All AeroPress scoops have the same capacity. A level scoop holds 12-13 grams of coffee. A heaping (rounded) scoop of coffee holds 16-18 grams.
Other Brewing Methods
I have heard of brewing recipes for AeroPress coffee makers that are different from the ones provided in the instructions. What is the best way to brew?
The instructions provided with AeroPress coffee makers and also available to download from this website describe a starting point from which users can deviate if they wish. The taste of brewed coffee is affected by all the variables in the brewing process. When using an AeroPress coffee maker the user selects the water temperature, the brew time, the coffee to water ratio, etc. AeroPress coffee makers enable the user to control all the brewing process variables and thereby brew a particular coffee with a desired brewing recipe. Taste is personal. There is no right answer to the question of how to brew a particular coffee and there is certainly no right answer for how to brew all coffees. With that said, we think the methods described in the instructions are great for most coffees.
I have heard of people using an “inverted method”. Why do they use it?
Some people brew with their AeroPress coffee maker upside down, which has been referred to as the “inverted method”. People who use the inverted method apparently do so to prevent premature drip-through of their coffee, to give them complete control over longer steep times, and to allow them to use coarser grind sizes. However, we strongly discourage using this method as it can cause the coffee maker to be less stable and prone to mishaps that expose the user to potential burns from hot liquid.
For precision brewing, use an AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap or Stainless Steel Flow Control Cap (compatible with AeroPress Original, Go, Clear, Premium, Steel, or Go Plus) or Variable Flow Control Cap XL (compatible with AeroPress Original XL and Clear XL). It allows you to eliminate drip-through, extend your brew time for as long as you want, and use whatever grind size you prefer!
SAFETY NOTICE: The “inverted method” can cause the coffee maker to be less stable and prone to mishaps that expose the user to potential burns from hot liquid. Be advised that we strongly discourage using the inverted method because it is less stable and therefore prone to tipping over and exposing the user to hot liquid.

Is there dioxin in paper AeroPress micro-filters?
No. The bleaching process used by filter paper manufacturers until the late 1980s used chlorine gas and the chlorine gas bleaching process created dioxin as a byproduct. In the late 1980s the filter paper mills switched to using what is called the non-elemental chlorine bleaching process (they use a chlorine compound, not chlorine gas) to eliminate producing dioxin as a byproduct.
Are the Standard size AeroPress paper micro-filters compatible with all AeroPress coffee makers?
AeroPress Standard size micro-filters are compatible with AeroPress Original, Clear, Go Plus, Premium, Steel and Go. They are not compatible with AeroPress Original or Clear XL. AeroPress Original XL and Clear XL require AeroPress XL paper micro-filters.
Health Questions
Coffee brewed by AeroPress coffee makers seems gentler on my stomach than coffee brewed other ways. Why is that?
Coffee brewed by AeroPress coffee makers contains about one-fifth the acidity of drip brewed coffee and one-ninth the acidity of French press brewed coffee. Because of this it’s easier on your stomach.
Does coffee brewed by AeroPress coffee makers have more or less caffeine than coffee brewed in other devices?
Tests done by an independent researcher showed that the caffeine content of coffee brewed by AeroPress coffee makers is the same as comparable strength coffee brewed using other methods. People often find they enjoy their coffee stronger when it is brewed in an AeroPress coffee maker because of the lack of bitterness, so that would result in more caffeine per cup.
Is AeroPress plastic safe?
All materials used in AeroPress coffee makers are FDA and EU approved for use in contact with food, and are free of BPA and phthalates.
Design Questions
Why did you take the numbers off the AeroPress Original plunger?
We stopped putting the water level marking numbers on the AeroPress Original plunger because we were concerned that they encouraged the use of the plunger in microwave ovens and we just do not know what effect microwaves have on the life of the rubber seal.
Why are there holes in the sides of the AeroPress filter cap? Doesn’t the coffee coming out of them miss being paper-filtered?
The bottom circular rim of the chamber is firmly clamped down on the paper micro-filter when you screw the filter cap onto the bottom of the chamber. Therefore all the coffee that you press down must go through the micro-filter paper. There is a tiny amount of coffee that instead of going straight through the filter and into your mug goes sideways through the micro-filter paper and emerges outside of the chamber in the filter cap. The side holes in the filter cap are there to enable this small amount of coffee to drip down into your mug. If those side holes were not there, some of this coffee would be pushed up and over the rim of the filter cap and then drip outside your mug.
What are the maximum and minimum mug diameters the AeroPress Original and AeroPress Clear fit?
The biggest mug you can press into with the AeroPress Original or AeroPress Clear has a top inner diameter of 3.75 inches (95mm). The smallest mug you can press into with the AeroPress Original or AeroPress Clear has a top inner diameter of 2.75 inches (70mm).
Why did you remove the four ridges on the outside of the AeroPress Original plunger?
We removed the ridges from the AeroPress Original plunger because they were scratching the inside of the chamber and had no function. We initially put the ridges on the plunger because we thought they would provide needed additional strength. That was not the case and to our surprise they were a source of scratching of the inside of the chamber.
What are the dimensions of the AeroPress Original, AeroPress Clear, and AeroPress Go Plus?
Plunger with Seal: 5.26″ tall, 3.28″ diameter
Chamber: 4.75″ tall, 4.22″ diameter (at widest part of the hexagon)
Compressed Plunger + Chamber: 5.26″ tall (height of the Plunger), 4.22″ diameter (diameter of Chamber)
Do the AeroPress Original, AeroPress Clear, AeroPress Go Plus, and AeroPress Go fit on the same size mugs, or does one fit on a larger size mug than the other?
The AeroPress Original, AeroPress Clear, AeroPress Go Plus, and AeroPress Go have the same cylinder diameter but the flange that supports the chamber on your cup is smaller on the Go. The Go can sit on a cup with a maximum inside diameter of about 3.25” whereas the AeroPress Original, AeroPress Go Plus, and AeroPress Clear can sit on a cup with a maximum inside diameter as big as about 3.75”. The AeroPress Original, AeroPress Clear, AeroPress Go Plus, and AeroPress Go will all press into a mug with a minimum opening diameter of 2.75”.
Cleaning & Storage Questions
How do I clean AeroPress coffee makers?
For day to day use, a simple rinse is sufficient because the plunger wipes the chamber clean as you brew. However, with the exception of AeroPress Premium (which is hand-wash only) you can wash AeroPress coffee makers in the dishwasher (top rack only, except for AeroPress Clear, which can be cleaned in the top or bottom rack). We recommend occasionally removing the food-grade silicone seal from the end of the plunger for a good washing inside and out with warm water and dish soap. If your chamber ever gets sticky, wash it with vinegar.
How do I clean the food-grade silicone AeroPress seal?
Remove the seal from the end of the plunger and wash thoroughly inside and out with warm water and dish soap. There is no adhesive on the seal, so you can easily remove it for cleaning and then replace it on the AeroPress plunger.
Can I clean AeroPress coffee makers in the dishwasher?
While the AeroPress Premium is hand-wash only due to its handmade nature, you can clean all other AeroPress coffee makers in the top shelf of your dishwasher (although AeroPress Clear and Clear XL can be cleaned on the top or bottom shelf), but a simple rinse is sufficient because the plunger wipes the chamber. If your chamber ever gets sticky, wash it with vinegar. We recommend occasionally removing the food-grade silicone seal from the end of the plunger for a good washing inside and out with warm water and dish soap.
My AeroPress Premium Aluminum Flange or Stainless Steel Filter Cap has developed some hard-to-clean spots. How do I remove them?
Try cleaning the stained area with Dawn dish soap, very warm water and a microfiber cloth. (You can also use a cotton swab to clean the hard-to-reach places.) If any stains remain, try cleaning with isopropyl alcohol.
Seal Troubleshooting
My food-grade silicone AeroPress seal is sticky. How do I clean it?
The seal can be cleaned using hot water and dish soap. We advise you to occasionally remove the seal from the plunger and wash it inside and out with hot, soapy water to prevent the accumulation of coffee oils. Use a paper towel to provide a little abrasiveness.
The food-grade silicone seal came off the plunger. Can I put it back on?
Yes. The black seal is fitted onto the end of the plunger. There is no adhesive. To fit the seal back onto the end of the plunger, position the seal on the end of the plunger and then turn the seal while pressing it onto the plunger until it gets fully seated.
Miscellaneous
How much does the AeroPress Original weigh?
The weight of the AeroPress Original (including the chamber and plunger, the filter cap, the scoop, and the stirrer) is 7.75 ounces.
When camping, backpacking or traveling light, the parts of the AeroPress Original you would take along (the chamber, the plunger, the filter cap, and however many paper microfilters you thought you’d need) weigh 6.5 ounces. You would leave the AeroPress scoop and stirrer at home, and use whatever spoon you were already bringing on your hike as a scoop and stirrer.
How do I separate the chamber and plunger?
Holding the AeroPress coffee maker with the food-grade silicone seal facing you, brace your fingers around the chamber flange and push both of your thumbs against the seal. This will push the plunger up through the chamber making it easier to pull the two pieces apart.
The filter cap is stuck tight onto the chamber. How do I remove it?
This is like removing a screw top lid stuck on a jar. You can try lubricating the filter cap with a little water or cooking oil to make it easier to turn. Or, you can buy a sheet of rubber like material that is intended to help you grip the lids of jars to make it easier to twist the lids – try using one of those. You also can try running hot water over the filter cap (not the chamber). The filter cap expanding with heat may make it easier to turn.
What is the warranty on AeroPress coffee makers?
AeroPress brand products are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase from an authorized retailer. If you think you purchased a defective AeroPress product that is under warranty, please contact us and report the problem. We will promptly be in touch.
Can you take AeroPress camping?
Yes, you can take AeroPress coffee makers camping*! While any AeroPress coffee maker can be taken camping, the AeroPress Go and AeroPress Go Plus are perfect for a camping trip. I peeled off the sticker from the AeroPress chamber and it left some sticky residue. How do I remove it?
Take a piece of paper towel and soak it with a little canola or olive oil. Lay the oil-soaked paper towel flat over the residue, pressing to adhere, and leave it for 10 minutes. Then, remove the oily paper towel and wipe away any remaining oil with a clean paper towel. Wash your AeroPress chamber with dish soap and warm water. This should remove the residue.

Materials
What material do you use for the seal?
The seal is made of food-grade silicone. Silicones are rubber like materials that are primarily made of silicon and oxygen. They are frequently used in the manufacture of kitchen implements including those used for baking because of their non-toxicity and excellent durability including resistance to heat. Up until October of 2018 the AeroPress seal was made of a thermoplastic elastomer. Both the silicone and the thermoplastic elastomer are FDA and EU approved for use in contact with food.

The slider on my Go Plus lid won’t open far enough. What’s wrong?
A very small number of Go Pluses had their magnetic slider installed upside down. However, there’s an easy fix. As the slider is held on with a magnet, simply remove the slider, turn it the other way, and pop it back on. See here for an image showing how the slider should be oriented.
Will my AeroPress Original, Premium, Steel, Go or Clear fit inside the Go Plus tumbler?
In order to ensure two critical functional design aspects for the Go Plus, it was not possible to fit an AeroPress Original, Premium, Steel, Go or Clear in the Go Plus tumbler. First, in order for the Go Plus to be cup holder compatible, it needed to have a narrower plunger top. Anything wider would have rendered it incompatible with most cup holders. Second, in order to ensure that the Go Plus packs up securely inside the tumbler, the bottom of the chamber had to be designed with two customizations that enable it to snap securely into place.
